ANSCHLUSS OF AUSTRIA
JOSEF BURKEL (1895 - 1944) Gauleiter of the Saar region, responsible for the deportation of over 6,000 Viennese Jews to concentration camps. Partly-printed D.S. with printed signature, 1p. sm. folio, Vienna, December, 1938, thanking Alois Schick for assistance in preparing for the 'People's Vote' on April 8, 1938...the greatness of the historical event...which only few generations experience...'. Sold with a pro-Anschuluss flyer distributed in Austria, praising Adolf Hitler and concluding: 'We Will Win! We Must Win!' Each curled and notably worn, with some foxing, spots of loss, and one 3-4 in. split present along bottom edge of the flier. These documents were originally rolled into a cardboard tube (also included), with a mailing sticker bearing a Vienna hand cancel and a mailing address to an NSDAP group in Niederthalheim.
