BERNARD LAW MONTGOMERY’S MESSAGE TO THE TROOPS BEFORE D-DAY INVASION
(1887 - 1976) British Field Marshall who commenced the drive at El Alamein that ultimately drove Rommel from North Africa. Also involved in the invasions of Sicily and France. His personal D-Day message to the troops on 21 Army Group letterhead, 1p. 4to., [n.p.], 1944, reading in part: 'The time has come to deal the enemy a terrific blow in Western Europe…under the supreme command of General Eisenhower...To us is given the honour of striking a blow for freedom which will live in history; and in the better days that lie ahead men will speak with pride of our doings. We have a great and righteous cause. Let us pray that 'The Lord Mighty in Battle' will go forth with our armies, and that His special provenance will aid us in the struggle...' The conclusion bears Montgomery's facsimile signature. Red stain, tiny chips to left edges, with some creases and pin holes, still very good. Should be seen.
