MAJ. GEN. HAROLD W. BLAKELEY'S WARDATE MAPS (7)
Great lot of seven maps owned by U.S. Army Maj. Gen. HAROLD W. BLAKELEY (1893 - 1966), commander of the 4th Infantry Division Artillery at the time of Operation Overlord and the Battle of the Bulge. Most are Army-issue and likely field-used, measuring approx. 31.5 x 25 in. Includes: British Ordinance survey map of the Amiens-Mons region of France, Second Edition, printed 1943, with the designation 'Sheet No. 5'. WITH: Army Map Service map of the Wiesbaden region of Germany, First Edition, printed 1944, with the designation 'Sheet T2'. WITH: British War Office Map of the German region of Saarbrucke, First Edition, printed 1944, with the designation 'Sheet V.1'. WITH: British War Office map of the French region of Luneville-Epinal, First Edition, printed 1944, with the designation 'Sheet 15G'. WITH: British War Office map of German region of Strasbourg, First Edition, printed 1944, with the designation 'Sheet W2'. WITH: Army Map Service map of the German region of Reutlingen, First Edition, printed 1943, with the designation 'Sheet W-3'. WITH: National Geographic Society map of 'Germany and Its Approaches', 34.75 x 46 in., printed in Washington 1944, distributed by the Army Information Branch. All show appreciable wear and signs of use, with some bearing irregular folds and adhesive residue, suggesting their removal from a larger headquarters map. These maps were retained by Blakeley's aide-de-camp, Capt. Roswell F. MacGillivray, the stepfather of our consignor. Adding additional provenance is photocopies of a number of documents related to MacGillivray's service under Maj. Gen. Blakeley, including: a partial list of the general staff of the 4th Infantry Division Artillery, May 15, 1945, listing Blakeley as the division commander with MacGillivray listed beneath as his aide-de-camp; a 1955 personal postwar letter from Blakeley to MacGillivray; a June 24, 1945 travel pass issued to MacGillivray by order of Blakeley; MacGillivray's post-dated promotion certificate to the rank of captain; and a travel plan, Aug. 23, 1945, indicating that Blakeley and MacGillivray are to travel to a reception in Washington.
