NEUENGAMME GUARD TORTURES CONCENTRATION CAMP PRISONERS
Appalling contemporary retained carbon copy of a prisoner's statement in German, 1p. 4to., Oct. 3, 1945, detailing the barbarity of a Neuengamme concentration camp guard, Unterscharfuhrer Geus. In part: '...much feared by the prisoners...he had under him also the so-called 'death bunkers'...when those selected to die were already in the execution bunker, he insulted every one of them with the crudest remarks, as 'Russian swine', and more...he very often took the opportunity of thrashing the 'criminals', even in the last few minutes before their deaths...an extremely brutal and dangerous sadist...administered a terrible beating to some prisoners who had been driven by pangs of hunger to pick up the potato peelings or the boxes of bones...in bitterly cold, wintery weather, [his specialty was] to tie up the trousers of prisoners...play a jet of water on their neck, front and back, so that they were overflowing...forced [them], so that they could be watched, to stand in front of the courthouse, until they were frozen stiff...hundreds of prisoners were killed in this way...' Sticker affixed to top-right, some staining to the top-left, yet contents are unaffected. Very good condition, with full translation. This statement was undoubtedly prepared by British interrogators building their case for the 1946 war crimes trial of eleven Neuengamme defendants.
