RAYMOND GEIST - SAVED GERMAN JEWS
(1885 – 1955) American Consul and First Secretary of the American Embassy in Berlin from 1929 to 1939. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum describes Geist as 'responsible for issuing tens of thousands of visas to German Jews fleeing Nazi persecution. He became convinced that Nazi officials were pursuing a goal of 'annihilation of the Jews, ' but his warnings were largely ignored in Washington. Rare A.L.S. as Consul in Berlin, 4pp. 8vo., [Berlin], Aug. 9, 1934 to American Consul in Hamburg, John G. Erhardt. Geist offers high praise to Erhardt for a report submitted by him to the ambassador. Last page mounted, file holes, else very good.
