KNIGHTS CROSS OF THE WAR MERIT CROSS
Rare Knights Cross to the War Merit Cross (Ritterkreuz des Kriegsverdienstkeuzes) with neck ribbon. This example, is superlative condition, was of the type lacking swords and given to civilians for meritorious service in 'furtherance of the war effort'. This cross retains absolutely all of its original detail, the pebbling, arms, oak leaves and swastika untouched. The bottom bar is marked 'I' and is purity stamped '900'. Sold complete with the original neck ribbon which its proud owner repaired at bottom having worn the medal on so many occasions. The Knights Cross to the War Merit Cross was instituted on August 19, 1940 at the same time as the War Merit medal. It was ranked above the German Cross in Silver and in Gold, but below the Knights Cross to the Iron Cross. It was rarely awarded during the war years, giving it an aura of exclusivity.
