WANTED POSTER FOR ONE OF REINHARD HEYDRICH'S ASSASSINS
Very rare Third Reich 'wanted' poster in German and Czech, 18.5 x 12.5 in., Prague, May 28, 1942, issuing a 100,000 kronen bounty for any information on JOSEF VALCIK (1914 - 1942), one of the conspirators in the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. The poster bears his portrait, a description of his particulars, and a signature in type by SS-Standartenfuhrer HANS ULRICH GESCHKE as the Head of the Gestapo in Prague. Valcik was placed on look-out duty during the assassination, stationed 100 meters north of the main two assassins when Heydrich had been killed. In a later six-hour firefight with 750 SS soldiers, Valcik and four co-conspirators committed suicide in the crypt of a Prague church. German officials, filled with rage, sent fourteen members of his family to Mauthausen Concentration Camp, where they all perished. The poster itself refers to a 'Miroslav' Valcik; this is likely an error by German officials, as we are entirely confident it refers to Josef Valcik after just minutes of research, particularly his portrait. Folds, some damp stains, else very good.
