HAMMOND HOSPITAL, POINT LOOKOUT NEWSPAPER
Rare Civil War newspaper, the 'Hammond Gazette', 4pp. 8 x 11.5 in., Point Lookout, Md., March 10, 1863, further headlined: 'For the Benefit of the Sick and Wounded in Hammond General Hospital' A variety of news and other items are included, notably the resignation of Gen. Franz Sigel, an editorial on the dearth of promotions of medical officers by brevet, Yazoo Pass, war news, poetry, and a list of patients at the hospital ordered by state. Slightly worn with two toned spots, still quite good. In 1862, the U. S. government leased land at Point Lookout to build a military hospital for war casualties. The hospital was constructed on pilings and had 16 buildings arranged like the spokes of a wheel with four small buildings in the center. Hammond Hospital could handle 1400 patients, with casualties transported by water on steamers. After the Battle of Gettysburg, a POW was built on the same peninsula and Hammond started taking in injured and sick Confederate prisoners in addition to Federal soldiers, and the hospital soon became overcrowded. After the war ended, the government closed Hammond Hospital in 1865, and the buildings were demolished or sold.
