RICHARD NIXON
(1913 - 1994) 37th President of the United States, who reopened diplomatic ties with China and the USSR, resigned in 1974 due to the Watergate Scandal. Good content (and somewhat ironic) T.L.S. with his typical encircled initials 'R N', as president on White House letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Washington, Dec. 4, 1972 to retired Sen. George Murphy. Nixon thanks Murphy for his telegram upon Nixon's reelection a month earlier. He adds: '...Over the next four years I shall do everything I possibly can to make the kind of record which all Americans, regardless of party, can look back on with pride...' Paperclip stain at top, else fine. Just over a month later, the Watergate break-in trial would begin.
