PIERRE GASPARD CHAUMETTE
(1763 - 1794) French revolutionary politician, served as the president of the Paris Commune and played a leading role in the establishment of the Reign of Terror. He was an ardent critic of Christianity who was one of the leaders of the dechristianization of France. His radical positions resulted in his alienation from Maximilien Robespierre, and he was arrested on charges of being a counterrevolutionary and executed. Rare L.S. on 'Commune de Paris' letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Paris, Feb. 2, 1793, in French to the Secretary of the Commune. Chaumette asks that the secretary register the extract of the minutes of the Assemblee calling for the salary of the Mayor of Paris to be set at 30,000 francs. Fine condition.
