WILHELM II
(1859 - 1941) 'Kaiser Wilhelm', Emperor of Germany and King of Prussia, a socially progressive ruler whose reign ended with Germany's defeat in World War I. T.L.S. on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Housdoorn, Jan. 27, [n.y.], thanking archeologist HEINRICH SIMON for wishing him a happy birthday. Light mailing folds, else fine. Sold with three similar 'thank you' letters addressed to Simon, including a pair of signed letters from DETLOF VON SCHWERIN (1869 - 1940), German major general and court marshal of the abdicated Wilhelm II throughout his exile, and one letter bearing the signature of an unidentified Hofmarschall. Each very good to fine condition. HEINRICH SIMON was a member of the 'Deutsche Orient-Gesellschaft' ('German Orient Society'), the group largely responsible for uncovering the Ishtar Gate, the palaces of Nebuchadnezzar, and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
