J. EDGAR HOOVER AND CLYDE TOLSON
Good pair of signed letters from controversial FBI Director J. EDGAR HOOVER (1895 - 1972) and his Assistant Director and supposed lover CLYDE TOLSON (1900 - 1975), includes: T.L.S. 'Edgar' on official F.B.I. letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Apr. 21, 1954, thanking a 'Marie' for sending an Easter greeting card, adding: '...Washington was at its best for this special day...thousands of tourists swarmed into the city to enjoy the beauties of the season...I hope it was a happy occasion for you...' Some light creasing, else fine, with transmittal envelope. WITH: T.L.S. 'Clyde' on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., [Washington], Feb. 28, 1955, expressing his sympathies over the passing of Marie. Fine, with transmittal envelope, to which Clyde adds his franking signature and addresses the envelope to 'Mr. George Zagrafos.' Both men sign in remarkably similar ink and style. From the collection of George Zagrofos, catering manager of the St. Moritz Hotel, and his wife Marie, who became close friends with Hoover and Tolson after meeting them at hotel events.
