CLYDE TOLSON
(1930 - 1972) Long-serving Associate Director of the FBI, best known for his close, potentially romantic, relationship with Director J. Edgar Hoover. When Hoover died, Tolson inherited his $551,000 estate ($3.4 million today), moved into his house, and accepted the U.S. flag draped on his coffin. Rare S.P., 6.75 x 9 in. b/w (sight), a portrait image of Tolson in a suit, inscribed at the bottom: 'To 'Pop' George Zagrafos...with sincere best wishes...Clyde Tolson...April 1940.' Matted and framed to a total size of 10.25 x 12.5 in. Inside of the glass a bit dirty, else fine. Sold with a Christmas card (unsigned), bearing a printed message of good wishes from Tolson. From the collection of George Zagrofos, catering manager of the St. Moritz Hotel, and his wife Marie, whom became close friends to Hoover and Tolson after meeting them at numerous hotel events.
