'James', 3pp. 8vo., [Tennessee State Penitentiary, Nashville, TN], June 11, 1980, a card to his wife and courtroom artist Anna Sandhu Ray, who sketched Ray during his trial for a prison escape attempt and married Ray in prison in 1978. Ray writes in part: '..this morning I received all the paint supplies, brown pen, mixing bottles, paints...I'll start on some paintings again...try to have someone get you an appointment with Schuggs - it won't be too much longer before we give the state the choice of how I am leaving here.' James signs at the bottom in black ink. Some creases and spots of soiling, else very good.
