The pogroms known as the "Petliura riots" are large-scale pogroms that took place against the Jews in Ukraine between 1917 and 1920, and especially in 1919, during the Russian Civil War. In more than 1,500 separate pogroms, which took place in 1,300 different settlements, at least 50,000 Jews were massacred (the maximum estimate is as high as 200,000 killed) and tens of thousands were injured, tortured and raped. Disruptions were perpetrated by regular and irregular military forces that belonged, even if acted undisciplined, to all parties fighting the conflict: the Army of the People's Republic of Ukraine, the White Army of Anton Danikin, the Soviet Red Army, the Polish Army and more. It was not until 1920 that several Jewish residents of Ukrainian descent met in London to assist refugee refugees, and to arouse world public opinion. Two weeks later it was decided to establish a federation of Ukrainian Jews in London, and soon began operating in various channels. The assistance included supporting Jews affected by the riots anywhere, even beyond the borders of Ukraine, including the adoption of Jewish war orphans, organizing political propaganda for the victims of the pogroms, gathering documents and documentary material to shed light on the events, locating missing relatives, and providing medication assistance, supplies , And clothing.
