BRAXTON BRAGG
(1817-1876) Confederate major general who served under Albert Sidney Johnston in Kentucky, and led at Shiloh, Perryville and Stones River, relieved for his poor performance at Chickamauga and Chattanooga. Fine content A.L.S. signed in full twice on Carolina Life Insurance Co. letterhead (with Jefferson Davis listed as 'President'!), 4pp. 8vo., June 20, 1870 to Dr. S. H. Stout. In part: '...I have been gratified to learn that you saved the greater part of the valuable records, mostly medical, which you had made with so much labor during the war. There was no part of the organization and administration of the Army of Tennessee so satisfactory to me as that of the Medical dept. and especially of the Hospital Dept...It has occurred to us that a connected history based on your records would be very valuable...perhaps I could have it done by our Southern Historical Society of which I am now the President...Genl. J. E. Johnston was elected Vice Presid't for Georgia, and requested to organize a branch...' In his signed postscript, Bragg offers advice on fire services in Stout's small community. A few old cello tape stains, else very good. Samuel Hollingsworth Stout (1822-1903) served as the organizer and medical director of the Hospital Department of the Confederate Army in Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana. The records spoken of here now reside at UNC.
