A Classic Book. Shnei Luchot HaBrit. Most Impressive and Beautiful Copy.
Authored by Rabbi Yeshayahu ben Avraham Horowitz – The Holy Hashla
Amsterdam 1698. Emanuel Attias Printers.
Size 32cm. Special cover page for the introduction to the book ‘Vavei Amudim’ Computerized Jewish Book Otzar: Item no. 98157.
Impressive, beautiful copy. Original leather binding, with embossing. Wide margins.
The first four pages are slightly restored at the edges.
The holy Shelah, Rabbi Yeshayahu Horowitz, was the son of Rabbi Avraham of Lelov.
Born in Posen in 1560 (some claim it was 1570-1), he was one of the sages of his generation. He was a student of The MaHarshal, MaHaram of Lublin and Rabbi Yehoshua Pollack – author of the Book Me’irat Einayim. The Shelah was a member of "The Committee of the Four Countries”, and also served as Rabbi of esteemed
communities in Germany and later Prague.
In 1621, The Shlah emigrated to Eretz Yisrael, and was appointed Rabbi of Jerusalem. It was here that he wrote his renowned book ‘Shnei Luchot HaBrit’.
The Shla moved to Safed to escape the Muslims and ultimately settled in Tiberias.
He passed away in 1630.
The first edition of the Book ‘Shnei Luchot HaBrit’ was printed in Amsterdam in 1649.
It was later reprinted in 1687.
This copy’s edition is, however, especially beloved by
Jews, as it was printed the same year that the Ba’al Shem Tov, Teacher of the Jewish Nation, was born.
Rabbi Yosef Shmuel of Krakow, Rabbi of Frankfurt, wrote in his endorsement of the book: “It is well-known the great benefit resulting from this holy book, Shnei Luchot HaBrit, authored by the saintly great Gaon… and the laws and explanations of the commandments in this book are of tremendous benefit for so many.”
From page 161 is the Shelah HaKadosh’s commentary on the Passover HaGaddah, a most enlightening commentary.
