Tài Píng Rebellion Cash Coin, Shengbao - Antique Æ Coin
Highly collectible antique Bronze Chinese Coin from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom | Obv: 太平天国 Tài Píng Tiān Guó [Taiping Heavenly Kingdom]; Rev: 聖寶 Sheng Bao [sacred/holy treasure] | c. 1860 | Round with a square hole, 53.1mm | The currency of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (simplified Chinese: 圣宝; traditional Chinese: 聖寶; pinyin: Shèngbǎo; lit. 'Holy treasure') consisted of Chinese cash coins, the first of which were issued in the year 1853 in the capital of Tianjing (present day Nanjing). Most cash coins issued by the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom were made from bronze. Many of the Shengbao are fairly rare because the central government of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom allowed local power-holders within their realm to produce their own cash coins.
