Three Engraved Maps of Jerusalem – The Temple
Three engraved maps of Jerusalem depicting the Temple:
• "De Heylige en Wytvermaerde Stadt Ierusalem, Eerst Genaemt Salem", an imaginary bird's eye view of Jerusalem. By the Visscher family (Dutch family of cartographers). Presumably from a Dutch edition of the Bible. [Amsterdam?, mid-17th century?].
The map depicts the Temple and Herod's palace. On its lower part, illustrations of the crowning of Solomon and the crucifixion of Jesus. Printed at the bottom of the map: "Dese Kaerte wert gestelt voor het 3. Cap. Nehemia" [this map was chosen for chapter 3 of Nechemya]. Text in Dutch on verso ("Beshryvinge Van Jerusalem…").
Leaf: 37X49 cm. Fair-good condition. Browned paper. Fold lines. Tears along margins and fold lines, some of them open (affecting text on verso and slightly affecting engraving), some of them reinforced with tape mounted on verso.
Laor 1155.
• "Ierusalem, et suburbia eius, sicut tempore Christi florui" [Jerusalem and its outskirts in the time of Christ), a map of Jerusalem by Christian van Adrichem.
An imaginary map of Jerusalem and its outskirts, with small illustrations of sites and events referred to in the Bible and in other sources, starting with the kingdom of David and Solomon and ending with the crucifixion of Jesus.
The map is similar to the map printed since 1590 in various edition of the book "Theatrum Terrae Sanctae" by Christian van Adrichem (Laor 934) yet differs from it in several details (among other things, it lacks the dedication to the Archbishop of Köln. The text in the lower right corner is erased). Without text on verso.
Leaf: approx. 35.5X48 cm. Good-fair condition. Fold lines. Tears, some of them open, repaired with paper.
• "Hierusalem", map of Jerusalem with the Temple in its center, after Romeyn de Hooghe. [Amsterdam? 18th century?].
Leaf: 38X47 cm. Good-fair condition. Browning to margins. Stains. Tears to margins (not affecting the engraving).
