A LARGE ICON SHOWING THE PENTECOST Greek, 17th century Tempera on wood panel. Painted in bright colours against an architectural background. The apostles, led by St. Peter and St. Paul, seated on a horseshoe-shaped bench, in the lower part the personification of Kosmos wearing royal robes and a crown, holding a white cloth with twelve scrolls referring to the different languages the apostles spoke after the Holy Spirit had descended and to the twelve tribes of Israel. At the top of the composition rays of light descending from a segment of heaven symbolising the Holy Spirit. Areas of retouching. 54.8 x 39 cm.
