Rare and interesting! Form of a request for a visa to Eretz Yisroel handwritten and signed by Maran the Steipler Rabbi Yaakov Yisroel Kanievsky. Bnei Berak, 1930s.

In the form which was filled in and signed by the Steipler by his holy hand, he asks for a visa for his Gaon brother-in-law Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu kahn (on the form, Rabbeinu wrote 'Kagan'). In the line describing the occupation of the writer of the form, Rabbeinu wrote 'Ram at the Beis Yosef Yeshiva'. The filled-in form was confirmed by the renowned activist the Gaon Rabbi Yonoson Binyamin Halevi Horowitz Rosh Yeshivas Meah She'arim and one of the leaders of Agudas Yisroel in Frankfurt and Israel. In the end, Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu never got to immigrate to Eretz Yisroel and perished during the terrible Holocaust.

It should be noted that Rabbeinu the Steipler signed his family name in Yiddish script (קניעווסקי rather than קניבסקי, which is a rare thing in his letters that were written from Eretz Yisroel).

The Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu Kahn (1889-1941), the Rav of Karhole, Stardrog and Orela. In his youth, he studied at the yeshiva of the Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Chaim Goloventzitz in Minsk and with the Gaon Rabbi Pesach Pruskin in Shklov. Received his rabbinic Semicha at a young age by the Graz Meltzer. For a while, he studied as a Chevruta of Maran the Chazon Ish (in his youth) and he matched him with his sister. Was killed on Kiddush Hashem during the terrible Holocaust.
