Henry Mattson Oil on Canvas, circa 1936, self-portrait, SUR, 20 x 14", WPA Era, a similar image is in the Museum of Modern Art and dated 1936.Henry Mattson, an artist who was known for his poetic, brooding seascapes and landscapes. Mr. Mattson had many showings at the Rehn Gallery here. His works were acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art here and the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Phillips Memorial Gallery in Washington, among other museums. He was born in Gothenburg, Sweden, Aug. 7, 1887, came to the United States in 1906, began work in a machine shop at Worcester, Mass., and studied art at the Worcester Museum. Since 1916, he had been a member of the Woodstock art colony, where for a time he had studied under John Carlson. He became a citizen in 1913. Mr. Mattson was fascinated by water—“Lonely Sea, ” Deep Water, ” “Black Reef, ” “Water fall” were some of the titles of his paintings. His palette showed a predominance of dark and shaded blues, deep and in tense greens. Measures 20 x 14 approx
