Sefer HaKuzari, Venice 1594. With R. Yehuda Moscato’s Kol Yehuda Commentary.

A complete copy of Sefer HaKuzari, one of the most famous works of the medieval Spanish philosopher and poet R. Yehudah HaLevi completed around 1140. Originally written in Arabic, it was then translated into Hebrew and is regarded as one of the most important works of Jewish philosophy.

Divided into five parts (“ma'amarim”) it takes the form of a dialogue between a rabbi and a pagan. The pagan is then mythologized as the king of the Khazars who has invited the Rabbi to instruct him in the tenets of Judaism.

This 1594 edition is the first edition printed with the commentary of R. Yehudah Moscato (c. 1530 – c. 1593), a leading Italian Rabbi, poet, and philosopher of the sixteenth century. His commentary, “Kol Yehudah”, was the very first commentary to the Kuzari. Till this day, this commentary remains unparalleled and has been printed in virtually every edition beginning with this one.

A fine copy in very good condition. Light stains. Previous ownership stamps seen on various leaves. Bound in an ornate, new leather binding.

299 pp.

Vinograd, Venice 794.
