Rare bronze menorah. Dedicated in memory of Jews killed in the Hungarian Revolt of 1848.
Seven-branched menorah made in memory of the Jewish rebels of the 1848 revolution inHungary, estimated to have been made in the 1940s.

The oil holders have decorations of olive branches. In the center is a panel with the inscription: “How the Mighty Have Fallen, 1848/49” (in Hungarian as well). Above that is the Lion of Judah symbol. On the other side is a relief of the Tablets and the Star of David. At the base is Hungarian writing meaning “Ministry of Defense, Military Rabbinate”.

Height: 24.5cm. A little bent.

Background: As part of the “Spring of Nations” in 1848, a revolt broke out in Hungary against the Austrian Imperial family, which controlled the country. During the revolt they tried to establish self-rule in Hungary, but after a series of battles with the Austrian army (which was helped by the Russian czar), it was crushed. Many Jews were killed in these battles, and this menorah was made in their memory.
