(1895 - 1993) American General, commanding the 82nd Airborne Division in Sicily and Normandy and the XVIII Airborne Corps in the Battle of the Bulge. T.L.S. on his personal letterhead, Pittsburgh, PA, 23 June 1980, 1 page, 7.5 x 10.5 in., to Major General De Witt C. Smith, US Army War College, Carlisle, PA. In part: '...Just a word of deep appreciation for your letter and for the lofty tone of your opening remarks to the recent National Defense Seminar. What you said reflects the essence of the ideals of our Officer Corps.' Signed at conclusion in black ink. Mailing folds, paper clip stain in the upper left.
