Chatam Sofer on the Yoreh De’ah—signature of the Admor Rabbi Chaim Yisrael Morgenstern of Pilov. Kotzk.

Chatam Sofer, Yoreh De’ah, by Rabbi Moshe Sofer the Av Beit Din of Pressburg. First edition, Pressburg 1860.

The title page has a signature of the Admor Chaim Yisrael Morgenstern of Pilov-Kotzk: “I bought this, Chaim Yisrael Morgenstern of Kotzk.” The blank first leaf has a note of ownership: “All parts of the Shut Chatam Sofer I bought from Rabbi Yosef Morgenstern son of the Admor, which he inherited from his father’s estate, see Shmuel (Eliyahu?) Gorfinkel of Pilov.”

Binding is loose, stains from moisture and mold, overall fair to good condition.

Admor Rabbi Chaim Yisrael of Pilov-Kotzk (1840-1905) was the son of the Admor Rabbi David of Kotzk, and grandson of the Saraf of Kotzk, the Admor Rabbi Menachem Mendel. He succeeded his father in Kotzk and then following a fire in Kotzk moved to Pilov. He was one of the greatest Admorim of his time and many came to him for advice and blessings. He was extremely fond of the mitzvah of settling the land of Israel and he wrote a book on the subject, “Shalom Jerusalem”.

He also tried to unite groups of Jews to moved to Israel but because secular Jews were encouraging immigration he stopped. His son was Rabbi Yitzhak Selig of Sokolov-Kotzk, a leader of Polish Jewry before the Shoah. Some of his divrei torah were gathered in the book She’erit Yisrael.
