Signatures of ownership of Rabbi Menachem Manis Gold, maggid meisharim in Tarnopol and “the shadchan of Rabbi Meir Shapira”. Handwritten signature of Rabbi Eliezer Novik, who notes by hand: “I received this as a present from my friend the Gril [Rabbi Yehuda Leib] Maimon…1955.” Signature of “the important bachur Zvi Hirtz Menachem Entner… Tarnopol.”

The blank first leaf and throughout the book are a number of handwritten notes by Rabbi Meir Shapira of Lublin, one of them referencing the Admor Rabbi Avraham Yaakov (the First) of Sadigura and twice saying “I heard in the name of a gadol.”.

Rabbi Meir Shapira of Lublin (1887-1934) was the son of Rabbi Yaakov Shimshon of Shatz. He came up with the idea of Daf Yomi and was a rabbi in a number of cities. In 1930 he settled in Lublin, where he set up the Chochmei Lublin yeshiva. He was head of the Agudas Yisrael in Poland and a member of the Polish parliament for the party.

Rabbi Menachem Manes Gold was a dayan and maggid meisharim in Tarnopol. He was sent by Rabbi Yaakov David Breitman from Tarnopol to study under the Maharam Shapira before becoming the former’s son-in-law, and he served as the shadchan for the Maharam.

It is known about additional copies in which the name of Rabbi Manes Gold appears together with Rabbi Meir Shapira who bought the books from his matchmaker’s library and brought them for honor to his famous yeshiva.
