A VERY FINE ICON SHOWING THE RESURRECTION AND THE HARROWING OF HELL Russian, 16th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. Finely executed in great detail. The haloes and border made of gold. The figure of Christ is represented against a mandorla. He tramples on the broken doors of Hades. He drags Adam out of the open mouth of the monster that personifies Hell. The crowd behind represents the Just people of the Old Testament, who were also raised by Christ during the Anastasis. In the upper part the Enoch, Elijah and the Good Thief in the paradise. 31.7 x 26.9 cm.
