A VERY FINE ICON SHOWING THE DORMITION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD (KOIMESIS) Greek, Cretan, 17th century Tempera on wood panel. Finely executed on a gold ground. The lifeless body of the Mother of God on a bier, surrounded by the Apostles. In the background Christ holding the soul of his Mother in the form of an infant. The scene framed by two tall buildings. Greek inscription on the lower border. Minimally worn, vertical crack. 40.3 x 32 cm.
