A VERY FINE ICON SHOWING THE LIFE OF PROPHET ELIJAH AND HIS FIERY ASCENT TO HEAVEN HIMMELFAHRT Russian, mid 19th century Russland, Mitte 19. Jh. Tempera on wood panel. The border made of gold, incised with foliage. Shown sitting in the wilderness with a raven delivering food by the order of God, the surrounding scenes narrating the life of the prophet. Elijah ascending to heaven on a chariot of fire in the upper right corner. Rendered in a fine detailed manner with reds and blues against a rocky terrain of saturated ochre. 40.5 x 34 cm.
