Jaffa
State Medal, 1965
There is almost no occupier who has passed through the area and not secured for himself his important port - Jaffa. In 70 BCE Sennacherib conquered the city, and in 332 BCE Alexander the Great turned it into a Greek city. Jonathan the Hasmonean conquered Jaffa in 148 BCE, and President Shimon fortified it. In a revolt against the Romans, the city fell two years before Jerusalem. The Arabs conquered Jaffa in 636 BCE. Between the years 1268-1099 the Crusaders held Jaffa, until the Mamluk Sultan, Beavers, conquered it from them. In 1516, the first Turkish Sultan Salim entered Jaffa. The Ottoman period lasted four hundred years. For generations, the foreign residents of Jaffa changed from time to time, but Jews lived next to the foreigners almost continuously, and a permanent Jewish settlement was renewed in Jaffa in 1820. In 1909, its Jewish residents established a Jewish neighborhood, which was Tel Aviv.
The face of the medal: In an imaginary painting, the ancient houses of Jaffa are located on the legendary whale of the prophet Jonah, who is said to have "descended to Jaffa" (Jonah, chapter one). The Hebrew letters "Jaffa" merge with the whale's tail. The body of the whale and its tail form a kind of bay. On the left, the name Jaffa appears in Latin letters.
The back of the medal: a transcript of the back of the Jaffa coin from the time of the emperor Alagbalus (222-217 CE). All around, an inscription in Hebrew "Jaffa Coin III 1777-22" and in English "Jaffa Coin 217-222 CE".
Scope: State emblem and the words "State of Israel" in Hebrew and English. On the silver medals "935 silver" and in English "sterling".
Numbering: All medals are numbered.
Design: Medal Face - Jean David. Back of the medal - Alex Berlin.
Carving: Kretschmer.
Coinage: Kretschmer.
