ANTIQUE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR ENGRAVING COLLECTION

A page with engraved illustrations from the Frank Leslies Illustrated Newspaper from 1871. Later renamed Leslies Weekly, it was an American illustrated literary and news magazine founded in 1855 and published until 1922. It was one of several magazines started by publisher and illustrator Frank Leslie. An original antique print by Thomas Nast from Harpers Weekly, a New York based newspaper in the last half of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. In weekly issues, Harpers presented a mixture of news stories, gossip, poetry, and most notably, wood-engraved illustrations. These pictures remain one of the best sources for lively, informative images of nineteenth century America. An antique lithograph print titled View of the great conflagration of Dec. 16th and 17th 1835; from Coenties Slip by John Henry Bufford (American, 1810-1870) and published in 1836 by J. Disturnell and J.H. Bufford. An antique engraved print titled Refugees from southern Missouri driven from their homes by the Confederates during the Civil War, from Leslies Weekly. An antique engraved print of Battle of Wilsons Creek Near Springfield, Missouri, august 10, 1861 Civil War Engraving from Famous Leaders and Battle Scenes of the Civil War, published in 1864.
