PAIR ANTIQUE EUROPEAN ETCHINGS OF MALE PORTRAITS

A pair of antique copper plate etchings on thick laid paper. The first: Portrait of a boy standing full-length, turned to the right, his hand on the hilt of a small sword, after a painting possibly by Jacopino del Conte (traditionally attributed to Pontormo); engraved by Victor Gustave Lhuillier; circa 1860-1878; signed in the plate lower left. Jacopino del Conte (1510-1598) was an Italian Mannerist painter, active in both Rome and Florence.Victor Gustave Lhuillier (1844-1889) was a French engraver and etcher. The second: Portrait of El Primo (Diego de Acedo), Dwarf of Philip IV after Diego Rodriquez de Silva y Velazquez; engraved by Auguste Laguillermie, 1869; signed in the plate lower right and left; dated in the plate lower to the center. Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (1599-1660) was a Spanish painter, the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV, and one of the most important painters of the Spanish Golden Age. He was an individualistic artist of the contemporary Baroque period. In addition to numerous renditions of scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted scores of portraits of the Spanish royal family, other notable European figures, and commoners, culminating in the production of his masterpiece Las Meninas (1656). Auguste Laguillermie (1841-1934) was a French painter and engraver, founder of the Artistic Society of French Aquafortists (Paris), working in the line of Alfred Cadart. Graphic Art Prints and Collectibles.
