ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ICON OF NURSING MOTHER OF GOD
An antique Russian Orthodox icon. The icon depicts Virgin Mary breastfeeding the infant Jesus, Mlekopitatelnitsa in Russian, with medallions of St. Nicholas and Christ on the sides. Inscription in the lower part: A Copy of the Holy Miraculous Icon of the Milk-giving Mother of God of the Russian skete of the Hilandar monastery on Mount Athos. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. This iconography of the Madonna and Child, named Nursing Madonna in the Western tradition, is very rare for the Orthodox icon painting. Antique Russian Religious Items and Collectibles.
