The Rosh Ha'Shana tractate, Vilnius 1881.
On the title page of the book, the stamp of Rabbi Eliyahu Chaim Meisel of Lodz who was one of the leaders of the Jews of Poland.
Rabbi Eliyahu Chaim Meisel (1821-1912) was known as a genius already as a youth. At the age of nine he studied at the Volozhin Yeshiva with Rabbi Yitzchak of Volozhin. At a young age he was called to serve as rabbi in Horodok. Later he served as a rabbi in several other cities. In 1877 he was chosen as the rabbi of Lodz where he served as a rabbi for more than thirty years, until his death in 1912.
Beside his genius, he was known for his kind heart and generosity. He became an admired figure among the masses and his grave in Lodz became a place of prayer and was covered with 'Pitka'ot' (notes).
On his gravestone it was inscribed: "The head of the Ariel exile, minister of the Torah, illuminating the eyes of the sages of the redemption, perfect in piety and modesty, the nobleman of the shepherds of Israel, the Admor Eliyahu Chaim Meisel … three times he prevented a disaster … and epidemic was stopped, he protected orphans and widows in his righteousness … he founded all the charity and Torah institution of our community…"
