The first edition of the book Kos Ha'Yeshu'ot by Rabbi Shmuel Schotten Ha'Cohen Katz the head of the large Kloiz of Frankfurt am Mein and the great-grandfather of the Chatam Sofer. Frankfurt am Mein, [1711]. First edition.
Before us is the personal copy of the Kabbalist Rabbi Natan Adler, with his signature. Enclosed is a signed confirmation by Rabbi Yitzchak Yeshaya Weiss.
On the title page of the book, it is written twice:
"Belongs to … Rabbi Natan son of Rabbi Shimon Adler Katz…" - - he is Rabbi Natan Adler Katz, the leading and admired rabbi and teacher of the Chatam Sofer. The upper inscription, in cursive writing, is by himself.
An additional inscription: "Given to me as a gift … my brother-in-law Rabbi Leiser …" – this is most likely the grandson and disciple of Rabbi Natan Adler who served as head of yeshiva in Frankfurt and his name is mentioned with that of his grandfather as one of the Ashkenaz Hassidim who were banned.
On the upper part of the illustrated title page there is a printed circle with an ancient signature written in it: "the young Eliezer…" above it, the above had signed: "[I have received] from my above brother-in-law Eliezer…"
On leaf 1, an ancient signature from the early 18th century.
At the end of the book, ancient ownership inscriptions: "This book was given to me as a gift … my brother-in-law [Eliezer?] … the young Moshe…" and similar inscriptions.
Rabbi Natan Adler was known as a wonder-worker whom the Chatam Sofer said of him in his eulogy that "he had reached the highest level of Hassidism and asceticism…" and testified that during a fire in Frankfurt, the flames did not touch Rabbi Adler's house. [Derashot Chatam Sofer pp. 371-373].
159 leaves.
