Keren Hamagen: It was established in the mid-1950s and acted to raise money to finance the purchase of weapons for the IDF.
Rabbi Zalman Sorotzkin (5640-5726) studied at the Slobodka Yeshiva, the Volozhin yeshiva, and the Yeshiva of Telz. In 1905, he married the daughter of Rabbi Eliezer Gordon of Telz and was one of the founders of the Vaad HaYeshivos in Vilna, and in 1929 he was elected Chief Rabbi of Lutsk and the Volhynia district. Rabbi Sorotzkin was one of the leaders of Agudath Israel in Europe.
In the year 1940, he fled Poland and immigrated to Eretz Israel and was one of the founders of the ultra-Orthodox community in Eretz Israel after the Holocaust, served as deputy chairman of Moetzet Gedolei HaTorah, and after the death of Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer in 1954 he became the council's chairman until his death in 1966. He served as Chairman of the Independent Education in Eretz Israel and re-established the Council of Yeshivas in Eretz Israel in 1941. He published many books, the most famous of which is "Oznaim LaTorah" (five parts) on the Torah.
