12th-8th century BC
A serpentine model wheel with felloe and spoke details to one face; accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Model Stone Wheel 74 x 75 x 8mm, This is round with flat sides: the inner side plain, the outer side with a groove around the edge and within that 18 spokes emanating from the central hole. This no doubt comes from a large model chariot or wagon, the cab no doubt of metal, but the wheels of stone. It is not easy to give a precise date or location to the wheel, but somewhere from Anatolia to west Iran is the likely area, and a period c. 1200-800 B,C. id the most likely time. The wheel is little chipped around the edges, but is otherwise in good condition.' 81 grams, 74mm (3"). Fine condition.
Provenance
The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; item reference W-71; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
