5th-6th century AD
A gilt-bronze Class Ai button brooch comprising thick rim and chamfered border surrounding a stylised male face with helmet, pellet eyes above bulbous cheeks and elliptical mouth; attachment points for a pin-lug and catchplate to reverse. 3.40 grams, 16.07mm (3/4"). Very fine condition.
Provenance
Formerly in an important Mayfair collection, acquired 1991; neat inked label with acquisition no. 91.228 to the reverse.
