Sheidlech (boxes for housing tefillin), rare Chabad Lubavitch pair, Morocco, beginning of the 20th century
Special, rare boxes for tefillin housings, made of cardboard covered in cloth, with a printed page bearing the inscription “Lubavitch Maroc.” Motht marks on the cover. Chabad Lubavitch Morocco: the movement’s operations began after (soon before his death) the Rayatz said: “A place has to be set up. Go to the Jews of Morocco, who need teachers and learned people, and practice Torah among them. There is no such thing as the division of the Jewish people, Ashkenazi or Sefardi or whatever. We are all the sons of Avraham, Isaac and Jacob, we have one G-d in Heaven and one Torah on Earth.” On the basis of these words, Chabad began its education work and Torah practice in Morocco. A short time after the Rayatz’s death, Rav Michael Lipsker travelled to Morocco, after the Rebbe wrote to him that it was the Rayatz’s order during his last days. Rav Lipsker arrived in Mekhnes in Iyar 1950, and began founding a yeshiva, with the help of Rav Refael Baruch Toledano. In Cheshvan 1950 he was accompanied by Rav Shlomo of Tosov, who was also the first Shaliach sent by the Rebbe himself, to serve as Shaliach in Casablanca and act as manager of the Chabad institutions in Morocco. Over the years many other shluchim came to Morocco at the Rebbe’s instruction. The Rebbe was very interested in the shlichut work in Morocco, and encouraged them endlessly.
