Sefer "Klei HaRo'im" by the Gaon, the Adere"t, in his Hand. Wondrous Composition
Sefer Klei HaRo'im, aggadic entries with novellae and elucidations. Elucidations written entirely in the hand of the exalted gaon Rabbi Eliyahu David Rabinowitz Teomim - the Adere"t, Av Beit Din of Ponovezh, Mir and Jerusalem. Wondrous composition written by the Adere"t while he was just an 18-year old youth. Complete composition, as yet unpublished!
Handwritten title page at the beginning of the book. The Adere"t noted, as he did on all of his works, the following statement: "If you have studied a lot of Torah, do not consider yourself accomplished." A short preface about the author's writing appears on the following leaf: "I began this compilation as a kind of Sefer Maleh HaRo'im on halachah; this one I wrote on aggadahs ... Eliyahu David Teomim I the writer ... and I finished it today, Friday, the eve of Shabbat Nissan 1863 here in Ponovezh, and I shall call it, with Hash-m's help, " Klei HaRo'im." This is followed by a table of entries. The book includes 80 entries in an encyclopedic order. Here are a sample of the entries: Aggadah - Is there an obligation to study aggadah? Bavli - Talmudic topics mentioned in Sha"s. Ba'alei Teshuvah - are they greater than complete tzaddikim or not, etc. Over the years, the Adere"t added omissions and supplements to the work. In column 31 he mentions his father, "I heard from my father, my teacher, the gaon M' Binyamin who said in the name of the gaon M' Ze'ev, the rabbi of Telz z"l [father of the gaon Rabbi Yisrael Salant], and in column 83 he mentions his twin brother, Rabbi Tzvi Yehudah.
Regarding composing this work, the Adere"t relates in his autobiographic book Nefesh David: "After the wedding (Tammuz 1861, when he was just 16 years old) I imagined that I would ascend to a high platform, and that now I would be able to sit in quiet and tranquility with Torah and Divine service, but Hash-m's thoughts are not our thoughts, and two months after the wedding, I felt pain in my eyes and with all my desire to study books, I did not heed the doctor's warning to avoid study and writing. They caused trouble for two consecutive years when I was unable to study, and I learned almost nothing then. I started to study and innovate novellae inclined to drush and in-depth study as was customary in earlier generations. This was easy to do given that I couldn't study diligently, and I wrote some notebooks of scattered and separate novellae and I called them with the name that I have noted, with Hash-m's help. I then authored the book Klei HaRo'im (this work before us, D. B.) as something of a Meloh HaRo'im on halachah, but in aggadah." We see from this that the work before us was written by the Adere"t two years after his wedding, when he was only 18 years old (as is verified also in the year detail in the book's colophon: 1863). Anyone who sees it will be amazed by the astonishing expertise in all of our Sages' literature and the works of the Earlier and Later Authorities.
