A long unknown responsum from the Admor Rabbi Moshe Halberstam of Bardejov to the Mahara”m Schick, c. 1878

A newly discovered long responsum from Rabbi Moshe Halberstam of Bardiov, addressed to the Maharam Schick – written by a scribe as dictated by the Holy Rebbe – 24 full pages of dense text – about the claims of the livelihood difficulties of the Jewish tavern owners who rent their premises from the regional ruler and serve the gentile residents of the city and the villages. The Admor Rabbi Moshe expounds the claims of the two parties on 4 pages and delves into the fine details of the law in 20 pages, including mention of his grandfather, his “teacher and rabbi” the author of Divrei Chaim.

Rabbi Moshe Halberstam (1850-1904) founded the Bardejov Chassidic dynasty. He was the eldest son of Rabbi Baruch of Gurlitz, the son of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz. His mother was the daughter of the Yitav Lev of Sighet. Rabbi Moshe studied under his grandfather, Rabbi Chaim of Sanz. In 1874 he was appointed rabbi and admor in Bartfeld (Bardejov). While there he gained a following of admirers and many Sanz Chassidim from Hungary went to visit him. He died during his father’s lifetime.

21x17 cm. This is in the handwriting of an assistant but not not in the Rebbes own Ksav Yad.
