An Antique 19th Century Chinese Porcelain Plate
An Antique 19th Century Chinese Porcelain Plate/Charger with Provenance. Hand-painted – typically used for display. At the center, there is a floral design surrounded by colorful fruit branches, flowers, and Chinese Letters – one in every cardinal direction. Underside with red underglaze mark typical for Qing Dynasty. Ca. Qing Dynasty, 19th Century. Size d: 5.5. Provenance: Collection of Edward Hyers Clayton (1886-1946). American writer and missioner. E.H. Clayton and his wife were missionaries of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society in charge of Wayland Academy, a missionary school in Hangzhou, China from 1912 to 1942. E.H. Clayton wrote a book Heaven Below based on his living experience in China.
