Letter by the Great Tzaddikim of Jerusalem, the Heads and Managers of the Kollel of the Prushim Community, with their blessings to the Tzaddik of Greiditz, Rabbi Eliyahu Guttmacher, for his donation to the poor of Jerusalem. Jerusalem [1852]

"We have received ... which was sent to our Kollel by the righteous Rabbanim who have received from the Rabbi Gabd and Ram of Greiditz Rabbi Eliyahu Guttmacher the eight and thirty 209 coins ... and with the letter of the above Gabd ... the  starvingTalmidei Chachamim widows and orphans in the Holy City, may it be from G-d  the philanthropist of our people for their charity and mercy may they merit ... by G-d always to save from dire straits dear souls ... and may they merit to see the goodness of Jerusalem". Confirmation of the reception of the donation and blessings to the donor, Rabbi Eliyahu Guttmacher, by the great Rabbis, activists and leaders of Jerusalem. 25 Tishrei [1852].  


[1] page, 10X10 cm. Blue paper. Handwritten with [4] Hebrew signatures and one in a foreign language. Among the signatories: Rabbi Yeshayahu Bardaki, Rabbi Zundel Salant, Rabbi Yaakov Berlin and Rabbi Yaakov Teomim.


Rabbi Yeshayahu Bardaki (1790-1862) a disciple of Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin, immigrated to the Land of Israel about 1810 and was one of the first settlers of the Jewish Ashkenazic Yishuv in Jerusalem. Since 1839, he served for a while as the head of the Ashkenazic community of Jerusalem, until the appointment of Rabbi Moshe Rivlin. Later he served as the leader and manager of the Ashkenazic community alongside the  community Rabbi, Rabbi Yosef Zundel of Salant and the son-in-law of Rabbi Shmuel Salant. 

Rabbi Zundel Salant (1786-1865) the disciple of Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin and Rabbi Akiva Eiger. The Rabbi of Rabbi Yisrael Salant and the father-in-law of Rabbi Shmuel Salant. in 1837, he immigrated to the land of Israel and served as a Moreh Hora'ah of the Ashkenazic community of Jerusalem. His son-in-law, Rabbi Shmuel Salant, said  "like the greatness of his virtues - so was his greatness in the Torah and like his proficiency in the Nigleh so was his proficiency in the Nistar. He was Gedol HaDor in the Torah as well as in Virtue, but in his great modesty he succeeded in hiding his greatness from human beings".

Rabbi Yaakov Berlin (ca. 1790-1870) the father of the Natziv of Volozhin, a wealthy man and great philanthropist. In 1850, when he was sixty he immigrated from Russia to Jerusalem and was one of the Gaba'im of the Etz Chaim Yeshiva and Talmud Torah.

Rabbi Yaakov Teomim - the Rabbi of the Vilan community. Immigrated to the Land of Israel and was one of the Dayanim of the Beit Din of the Ashkenazic community of Jerusalem.
