Sfat Emet V’Lashon Zehorit. Altona, 1752. First Edition. A Rare Polemic.

A particularly harsh composition, written by Rabbi Yaakov Emden against Rabbi Yonasan Eibeschitz. Includes a transcript of Rabbi Yonathan Eibeshitz’s amulets with Rabbi Yaakov Emden’s attestation that they were written according to Sabbatean beliefs.

Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael ben Zvi Ashkenazi Emden (1697-1754), was one of the greatest 18th century Rabbis. Although he refused to serve in the rabbinate until the end of his life. He was the son of Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Ashkenazi, known as the 'Chacham Zvi'.
Rabbi Yaakov Emden was one of the leaders of the resistance against the Sabbateans. A serious conflict broke out between him and Rabbi Yonasan Eibeshitz, who was involved in Kabbalah and was known as a writer of amulets.
Rabbi Emden discovered some of Rabbi Yonatan Eibeshitz's amulets, deciphered the texts and claimed that they indicated belief in Shabbtai Zvi.
Rabbi Emden accused Rabbi Yonatan Eibeshitz openly, causing a sharp and prolonged controversy between his supporters and those of Rabbi Eibeshitz. Rabbi Emden also opened a dispute against Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto (the Ramchal) and wrote harshly against many others.
