Pri Chadash. Amsterdam, 1692. First Edition.

Rabbi Chizkiya di Silva’s elucidation on Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah. This is the only part of his explanation to be printed during the author’s lifetime.

The Pri Chadash is Rabbi Chizkiya da Silva’s (1659-1698) most renowned work. It is an explanation on the Shulchan Aruch as well as the Rema’s glosses on it. Rabbi Chizkiya was born in Italy. He merited to emigrate to the Holy Land, and study under Rabbi Yisrael Yaakov Chagiz. In his composition he is unafraid to take a stance and pass Halachic rulings contrary to that of the Mechaber, Rabbi Yosef Caro and the Rema, Rabbi Moshe Isserlis, author of the Rema on Shulchan Aruch.

During Rabbi Chizkiya’s lifetime there were many that opposed his approach, with his works even being banned in Egypt. However, generations that following his death embraced his compositions, and until today his works are a pivotal Halachic reference resource for Halachic rulings, especially among the Tunisian Torah sages. The Pri Chadash is absolute in his rulings in cases that the Halacha was not clearly delineated.

Beautiful title page, decorated with copperplate engraving. Original, leather binding. Many dedications and signatures of numerous owners.
