Sefer HaChinuch. A Prominent Sefer Yesod! Venice, 1523. First Edition, Printed by Daniel Bomberg. Magnificent Copy With Antique Binding.

Sefer HaChinuch is one of the significant Sifrei Yesod, that lists and elucidates the 613 commandments according to the author’s counting system, following the order of the Parshiyot of the Torah.

The book was written as a continuation to compositions dealing with counting the commandments, including ‘Sefer HaMitzvot LeHaRambam’, ‘Sefer Mitzvot Gadol’ and ‘Sefer Mitzvot Katan’.

Many commentaries were authored on this book; Minchat Chinuch is the most famous of them.

The author chose to conceal his identity, referring to himself as ‘a Jewish man of a Levite Barcelona family’.

This copy’s title page notes the author’s identity as Rabbi Aharon. Widespread tradition names Rabbi Aharon HaLevi of Spain as the author. Although this is how it appears in most editions, there is no conclusive proof of this.

Venice, 1523.
