Nevi’im Acharonim. Venice. With Glosses and Kabbalistic Elucidation of Rabbi Zechariah ben Sa’adyah (Yichye ben Sa’id) al-Dhahiri.
One of these elucidations appears at the end of the Book of Yechezkel. It is a lengthy
explanation regarding the Holy Names and their implications, and their role in the correct
manner.

Rabbi Zechariah ben Sa’adyah al-Dhahiri,  also known as The Raza or Yichye ben Sa’id was
born in Yemen circa 1519. Although he resided in Kawkaban, north-west of Sana’a, Yemen’s
capital, Rabbi Zechariah influence was felt there too.
At age 20, Rabbi Zechariah left his hometown in search of a better livelihood. He headed
east, and travelled to India, Persia, Iraq and Turkey, ultimately travelling to Eretz Yisrael.
There he spent time in Tzefat and Teveriah.

In Tzfat, Rabbi Zecharia was greatly impressed with the study regimen and teachers in Rabbi
Yosef Caro’s Yeshiva. Rabbi Zecharia continued his journeys, and travelled on to Egypt. Along
his journeys, Rabbi Zecharia met illustrious Jewish leaders, including Rabbi Sa’adya ben
Yosef, Rabbi Moshe Cordovero and Rabbi Moshe of Trani.
Rabbi Zecharia eventually returned to Yemen and became one of Sana’a’s Torah leaders.
During the years 1573-1568 there was a battle between the Yemenites and the Turks,
resulting in the Turks being banished from Yemen. With the conclusion of the war, the Jews
were accused by the Yemenites of assisting the Turks. As a result, Sana’a’s Jewish leaders,
including The Raza were jailed, a sentence that lasted for 7 years. The Raza was jailed on an
additional occasion, the reason unknown.

Attached is a handwritten confirmation from the author’s 11 th generation descendant,
testifying that these annotations are indeed alike to Rabbi Zecharya ben Sa’adya’s
handwriting. On the verso of this confirmation is a photocopy of handwriting that is
certainly Rabbi Zecharya’s.

451-663 leaves. 40.5 cm. Good condition. Worm perforations on the margins and a few
tapings. Age stains. Worn from age. Beautiful, new, leather binding.

Unknown, significant glosses on Nevi’im, penned by of one of Yemen’s leading scholars.
