פרשת החפירות שנערכו מטעם האוניברסיטה העברית בחודש תרפ"ט פורמט גדול האלבום כולל הקדמה, מבוא, שרידי הבניין, רצפת הפסיפס וציוריה
כתבות , סקירה כללית, רשימת הציורים והלוחות הצבעוניים
בית הכנסת התגלה בסוף 1928 ונחפר בתחילת 1929. ממצאי החפירה פורסמו בסקר בשנת 1932. סקר נוסף נערך בשנת 1962 על ידי רשות העתיקות. בחפירה ובחשיפת רצפת הפסיפס התגלו שרידים של מבנה בית כנסת קדום יותר, כנראה מהמאה ה-5 לספירה, שממנו התגלו שרידי רצפת פסיפס קדומה. הערכת החופרים הייתה כי בית הכנסת המאוחר יותר, מהמאה ה-6 לספירה, נחרב ברעידת אדמה בשנת 749, או אף מוקדם יותר. חלקי המבנה שהתמוטטו ונפלו על רצפת הפסיפס הגנו עליה מבליה.
