בתחילת המאה ה-17 ניהלו תיאולוגים ואקדמיה שונים ברפובליקה ויכוחים סוערים זה עם זה. משנת 1604 התחולל סכסוך גובר וחשוב בין התיאולוגים ליידן יעקובי ארמיניוס ופרנסיקוס גומארוס.
ליבת הדיון הייתה תורת החטא הקדמון והיעוד הקדום. ארמיניוס נפטר באוקטובר 1609, חסידיו (הרמוסטרנטים) יגורשו מהכנסייה הרפורמית ב-1618/19.
היצירה היא משנת 1609, אך כוללת את רעיונותיו והצעותיו של ארמיניוס מ-1605 ו-1607 שנועדו להמשיך את הדיון והויכוח
